CLIENT:
Chicago Museum of Science & Industry
ROLE:
Lead Graphic Designer
RESPONSIBILTIES:
Concept to schematic design of overall exhibit operational sign system and entry marquee. Development of iconography, graphic motifs, design systems as well as conceptual brand identity for flagship show programming, Note to Neurons: The Science of Music.
TIMELINE:
24 Months from Concept to design development delivery
CHALLENGES FACED:
Creating and overall graphic language to aesthetically and functionally align with both the Notes to Neurons flagship show as well as all potential future programming.
Adherence to strict accessibility guidelines.
Designing within the framework of a space built almost entirely on a module, media centric system. Signage and graphics needed to be functional yet unobtrusive so as not to break with the goal of full guest immersion throughout the space.
Making use of lighting and media to branch out of static design
Designing for Notes to Neurons at MSI’s Griffin Studio as well as the overall Griffin Studio System meant creating a versatile graphic system built for a high-function flagship show that could also adapt to future rotating content.
As sole graphic designer from concept through schematic phases, I developed an adaptable sign system with a custom icon set, media-augmented entry marquee, and unique spatial graphics—all within MSI’s strict accessibility guidelines. Working closely with the creative director, client, and a world-renowned accessibility consultant, I delivered tactile graphic appliques, highly legible iconography, and type systems tailored for diverse guest abilities across print and digital media.
